Hospice Peterborough holds a special place in my heart. I worked with the organization for 26 years and had the privilege of meeting so many wonderful individuals: clients and their families, volunteers, Hospice staff, community supporters and partners across the province and country. Many of them are now my dear friends. I also watched Hospice grow to meet the needs of our community. Lead by passionate and energetic visionaries we worked together to create the magic that is now Hospice Peterborough. Five years ago my husband was diagnosed with cancer, Glioblastoma. I was still working at Hospice at that time and everyone gathered around and supported me and my family through the next 4 years leading up to Ken's death at Hospice Peterborough last summer. Ken and I participated in Hospice support groups and valued the wisdom and caring that we both received. I knew the team that planned and built Hospice Peterborough were thoughtful, intelligent people but until I spent time there with Ken and my family I had no idea how well it worked. How truly calm and supported it would feel to be in that space. How my children and grandchildren would be welcomed and cared for. Last year was the first Hike for Hospice I missed since Hospice Peterborough started hiking. I am eager to join my friends, The Originals, to hike together this year. I will bring Memory Stones and snacks to share when we meet up to hike together at Millennium Park . And I will think about Ken and so many other people I have loved and lost over the years.
